This six week course examines music that is generated by the natural environment. An important aspect of this artform involves the fabrication of acoustic and/or sensor-driven instruments that react to environmental forces. The unit examines the way in which the music produced by these natural energies (often at site-specific locations) tends to deepen the awareness of ordinary listeners concerning the beauty and complexity of the natural forces themselves (wind, rain, temperature, etc). The approach provides a lens through which previously unseen patterns of nature might be viewed. The unit also considers the notion of sublime patterns that might be repeated throughout the universe, and how these might be represented sonically. The course comes complete with a reading materials plus weekly lectures and tutorials with the author.
