John Coulter is sonic artist and instrument maker who lives in Mōhua Golden Bay with his partner Sheridan and daughter Sequoia. His creative interests include: live music, multichannel acousmatic music, environmentally-driven music and art, instrument making, and sound therapy. John completed a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Queensland in 2009, and worked as a Senior Lecturer in Music at the University of Auckland for 18 years. He has presented his work in several countries throughout the world including Australia, Canada, China, France, New Zealand, Portugal, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. Over his 30-year academic career he hosted several international conferences, received international awards for his artwork, was published in international journals, founded and ran an arts-based charitable trust, and more recently published Ear to the Earth: A Guide to Composing with Sound. He now works from his Aorere-based studio and spends as much time as possible exploring and learning from the surrounding natural environment.
