EAR TO THE EARTH: Creative Residency Details

Located in Collingwood Mohua/Golden Bay, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Ear to the Earth Studio overlooks the stunning Kahurangi National Park and is within 30 minutes’ drive of Able Tasman National Park. Its special location offers sonic artists a unique opportunity to interface with and learn from nature as part of their daily experience. The creative residency programme is unique in New Zealand as it provides hands-on facilitation of artists’ bespoke development and educational requirements as negotiated - offering individually tailored daily masterclasses and an intensive period of creative facilitation. Recipients are provided with 24/7 access to a high-spec multichannel audio production facility and art-making space, 1:1 expert support, comfortable and private accommodation, transportation, and a diet-specific locally sourced lunch. There are no output requirements associated with the residency.

  • The residency programme is open to individuals and couples who identify as sonic artists. It is not limited to New Zealand artists and welcomes international applicants.

  • The duration of the residency would normally not be less that 7 days and would not exceed 14 days, but may be negotiated for shorter/longer periods on request and may occur at any time to suit the availability of the applicant(s).

  • Applicants must have an established track record (nationally and/or internationally) in the field of sonic arts or associated creative disciplines.

  • The individually tailored 1:1 masterclass programme (see facilitation and education for further details) draws on the 30-year academic experience of the facilitator Dr John Coulter who was previously the Head of Composition Area at the School of Music University of Auckland New Zealand.
  • The residency offers optional guided field trips focused on exploring nature’s patterns for artmaking purposes. Surrounding natural areas include: Wharariki Beach, Onetahua / Farewell Spit, the Kaituna Valley, the upper Aorere River, Rawhiti Cave, Wainui Falls, and Totoranui Beach.

  • Response times to expressions of interest within 48 hours.
